Tips to Help You Memorize the Quran

Tips by Imam Is'Haaq Jasat - Author of 365 Tips to Help you Memorise the Qur'an

Now that Ramadan seems to be a distant memory and Eid Al-Adha is just around the corner it's the perfect time to invest in our relationship with the words of Allah. Here are a few pointers to get you going and guide your Quran memorization journey, whether it be a few new surahs or an entire chapter.

  1. Consistency is key

Establish a routine as you would with any other area of study - you’re only as good as the time you give. Create a timetable that works for you and make your memorization of the Quran a daily habit. Tarteel’s Challenge feature allows you to allocate a number of pages and / or an amount of time to your Quran recitation daily and sends you reminders so you’re given a push in the right direction, daily.

2. Develop your understanding

Sometimes it’s hard to attach ourselves to what we don’t know or understand, and the Quran is no different. If you don’t know the meaning of what you’re reciting, you might find it tricky to remember certain words or sentence structures. Read the translation of the Quran, particularly the section you’re trying to memorize, in the language you feel most comfortable with. Make sure you reflect on the verses, too!

3. Ask and you shall re ceive

Make dua. Yes, it’s that simple. Ask Allah to make it easy for you to memorize the Quran and inshaAllah you will gradually notice a difference in your ability. The Quran itself is filled with lots of duas, so pick out a few that apply to you and get reading.

4. Get yourself a study buddy

Memorizing the Quran doesn’t have to be a solo venture; tag in a friend or loved one that has the same goal so you can supplement one another’s learning. Ask them to lend an ear and listen to your recitation to test your accuracy and know when you’ve made a mistake. If you’d rather not recite in front of someone, Tarteel’s memorization mistake detection feature will listen to you recite whenever you’re ready, and highlight / notify you every time you miss a word, say the wrong one or jump verses. It uses artificial intelligence to listen to your recitation and identifies your mistakes as you’re reciting. It’s the pocket-sized study buddy you’ve been waiting for!

5. Make it a lifestyle change

Seize the opportunity to use your Quran memorization journey as a discipline for other areas of your life. Maintain a balanced diet so you have enough energy throughout the day and make sure you get enough sleep! These are things that help us retain our memory, and so it’s vital that you nourish yourself in the right ways.

6. Use Tarteel… obviously!

This isn’t a shameless plug, we promise! Whether you use it as a standalone or a supplementary resource, Tarteel can get you closer to reaching your memorization goals. The mistake detection feature coupled with advanced memorization mode is a winning formula for perfecting that verse and reciting with confidence.

7. Stay focused

The more time you spend with the Quran, the more of it you’ll unlock. This is a reminder to ourselves first and foremost, but try to limit the amount of time you spend scrolling through endless feeds of social media, binge-watching shows on Netflix and in general, just giving energy to things that don’t benefit you. Change your relationship with your mobile device and prioritize your good deeds and pursuit of knowledge!

8. Keep a schedule

Be realistic about how much time you can spend on memorizing and work within those parameters. Repetition and routine will help, so give an equal amount of time to every section you’re working on, no matter how well you think you know it. Don’t overdo your revision - it needs to work around you.

9. Be practical

Learn similar verses (Mutashabihat) in detail so you can properly identify the differences - or let Tarteel handle it for you. Every time you recite and make a mistake, Tarteel will pull up similar verses so you can pinpoint exactly where you’re going wrong. Knowing the order of the surahs also helps, as does mental preparation before you begin a session of memorizing.

10. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint

This one is a given, but remember to persevere and be resilient! It’s not easy but you’ll get there inshaAllah. Take it at a pace that suits you, make the effort and leave the rest with Allah. There is no one correct way to memorize the Quran and it’s important that you find what works for you and go with it.
